Sailing Committee News update

The last newsletter was in June and since then the Sailing Committee has continued to be active in a number of areas

The Open Meetings are virtually over for the year and during the year there were events organised for Solos Vagos, Catapults, Javelins Albacores and Tempests, Supernovas and Bytes, Ospreys, Lasers, DYS, 2000s. The largest event was the Topper Nationwide series event when about 170 boats competed. The events were successful and fleets ask to come back again.

The Tempests are planning their “Last Blast” event for the end of October.

Low water level has been a problem this year and all the information we have indicates that it is not improving in the near future. We have therefore been looking at measures that can be taken to help launching in the future and a budget obtained from the Management Committee. Lawrence Key has put in great effort to bring this to fruition and heavy plant and lorry loads of stone will appear on Sunday and Monday 8th & 9th October.

Work has been going on to replace missing fixed mooring and reposition those that have moved. You will also see 2 new fixed racing marks have been put in.

The committee is also putting together the calendar for next year for racing series and open meetings with dates set for the Solos Supernovas and Streakers. The Javelins, Albacores and Tempests are planning their annual event in May.

Gerry has been working hard to encourage racing for novices during 2017.

This is just an indication of what has been happening.

Later in the year the committee will be organizing the Christmas Cracker, to be followed by the Dinghy prizegiving. This is a single race with 1 mixed handicap start. The Cruiser fleet will have their annual dinner and prizegiving on 24th November and this is open to all members whether you sail a cruiser or not – talk to Lawrence Key about this.

On Boxing Day we organize a pursuit race that is a different approach with a fixed length of race and boats starting at different times based on their handicap. This is simple really and we will give you your start time. Just race and enjoy relaxing in the Galley afterwards.

Following the AGM the committee will be reconstituted and we are looking for volunteers to represent some fleets existing and new. There will be a separate article about this so do have a look at this.
