Social Update for February

The 2016 social program is now up and running and we are getting a lot of interest in the events that have been arranged.

Stargazing Evening:

Some 75 members attended the stargazing evening on 20th February and were given some brilliant insights to the world of astronomy from the Derby and District Astronomical Society. This began with an informative and amusing talk by John Brown of DDAS on the history of navigation and the role of the stars. We then debunked to the training room where a range of exhibits had been laid out including telescopes, photographs, articles and a model of the moon which has been signed by numerous Apollo astronauts.  Despite being a cloudy evening the sky cleared enough to then get outside and view the sky through a range of impressive telescopes. Highlights were a full moon with excellent detail and jupiter with 3 of its moons visible. To complement the work of DDAS one of our members, Colin Atkinson, brought along his sextant and gave a brief talk on his experiences with astral navigation in the merchant navy.
Thank you to all of those who attended and supported the evening. We hope to arrange similar events with DDAS in the future. Some photos are included on this page, but more can be found on the Club’s Facebook page courtesy of Tom Rothwell.

If any member is interested in us arranging a talk on any other subject as part of a social event, or would be happy to give a talk, please let me know.

Some upcoming events to put in your diary:

*    On Saturday 19th March Ceri is organizing a Ceilidh at the clubhouse. More details are on the website; book your place through the Club office - it promises to be a great evening. We are also trying to arrange transport from Derby and Ashbourne to make it a car free event.

*    As ever we are planning a Family Day on Easter Monday, 28th March. This will include a boat decorating competition, a race to the island (to hunt out Easter egg booty), and a treasure hunt around the buoys; there will also be an egg hunt in the boat park and colouring competitions for the younger members. More details will appear on the website over the next few days. Please come along and bring family and friends.
We are looking for volunteers to help on the day - please get in touch with me if you are willing to contribute.

*    On 23rd April we have the St George’s Day Ramble - this is yet another chance to get to know fellow members whilst trekking in the lovely Derbyshire countryside.

*    On 21st May there will be a Musical  Evening in conjunction with the Derwent Runners club; tickets will be on sale soon. There will be live music, dancing and tasty food from the Galley. Keep the date free.

We hope to see you on these and other social events this year.
