Training at Carsington Sailing Club

Welcome to the training section of Carsington Sailing Club's website. Here you will find information relating to all the many and varied sailing courses that are available throughout the year.

Carsington Water is one of the finest inland waters in the Midlands and home of Carsington Sailing Club, recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) as a Teaching Establishment, which means that you can be confident that the standard of tuition and equipment will be excellent.

Based near Ashbourne  in Derbyshire, Carsington Sailing Club offers a variety of Sailing Courses.

We are an RYA Training Centre, running Sailing and Powerboat courses, as well as occasional First Aid and Instructor courses. The range of training is tremendous and the Club trains 8 year old beginners right through to Adult Instructors.

We are an RYA Onboard Club through which we work with local schools to give youngsters the opportunity to try sailing and hopefully become more involved in it.

As a RYA Championship Club we have the active support of the RYA in enhancing our Youth racing program and making sure that sailing is accessible to young people.

Our Sailability section is very active and enables persons with disabilities to go sailing. Contact the Office for more details.

Our enthusiastic RYA Club Chief Instructor is out on the water most days, (Wednesday to Sunday) so it is probably best to contact our Office Administrator, again Wednesday to Sunday.

How do I book?

In this Training Section you can browse the training structure for both Adult and Youth Courses.

Available courses can be viewed on-line and these can be booked by contacting the Club by telephone (01629 540609) or visiting the Club.

The Training Fleet

Carsington Sailing Club understands that whilst on a sailing course you also need to practice the skills learnt. We therefore provide Temporary Membership and free use of training boats, for the duration of a course, subject to availability. This extra time on the water helps students practice the skills they have learnt during training sessions.

The Club has a varied selection of boats within the training fleet which include:

Monohulls – (Helm and Crew) Monohulls – (Single Handed) Catamarans
Comet Trio Topper Topper 16cx
Wayfarer Laser Dart 16
Wanderer Laser Pico
Mirror Optimist

All training boats, with the exception of Mirrors and Cats, are available for member's use for a fee, when they are not being used for training.
Also, all trainees have access to the Club boats for practice purposes during the duration of their course at no additional cost.

This will be subject to the weather and water conditions and at the discretion of the Club chief instructor.
