Learn Dinghy Sailing at Carsington Sailing Club
Learn to sail a dinghy at Carsington Sailing Club and you will be introduced to a sport that can be enjoyed at all levels and at all ages. Carsington Water is one of the finest inland waters in the Midlands and is the home of Carsington Sailing Club. The Club is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association as a Teaching Establishment, which means that you can be confident that the standard of tuition and equipment will be excellent. The RYA Dinghy scheme has been extensively revised and in learning to sail you will follow the syllabus for RYA Start Sailing & Basic Skills Certificates.
Carsington Sailing Club run a comprehensive set of courses which are a combination of RYA certified courses plus some which have been adapted around the facilities the club provides and which are based upon RYA courses.
All courses are open to Club Members and some are also open to both Members and non members.
The Sailing Courses offered at the Club are shown on the interactive diagram below and details may be accessed by clicking on the individual course boxes. Alternatively you may follow the various course menus to the individual course web pages.
What Equipment Will I Need?
We provide buoyancy aids, logbook and a beginners handbook, as well as all the help and encouragement you may require.
You will need plenty of warm clothing and waterproofs, some non-slip footwear which can get wet and sunscreen.
It is a club rule that all sailors must wear either a wetsuit/drysuit or clothing providing a similar level of protection between November 1st and April 30th. It is also recommended that appropriate clothing of a similar nature should be worn from May 1st to October 31st.
Ideally, you would be better to have either a dry suit, with warm clothing underneath, or a wet suit and a spray top / windproof layer. This will make your time on the water more enjoyable.
We also recommend a warm hat and sailing gloves.
If you are unsure about the suitability of your sailing clothing, please check with the office when booking. Full details will be sent with your joining instructions.
The clubhouse overlooks the water, with heated changing rooms and ample hot showers. There is a modern dedicated teaching centre with video and visual aids.
There is extensive free parking on-site. Campsites for Tents and Caravans are also very close by, some within short walking distance.
During the weekend there are full catering facilities, offering a selection of hot and cold food and beverages, from breakfast through to lunch and afternoon tea. There is also a fully licensed bar.
In the club house there is TV and a soft seating area. Free WiFi is also available.
If you have family who want to join you, but not sail, there is much to enjoy around Carsington Water.
Severn Trent Visitors Centre, adjacent to Carsington Sailing Club offers a restaurant and a variety of specialty shops including cycle hire. A large children's play/adventure area is adjacent to the sailing club.
For those who are energetic, but not wishing to sail, there is a path around the lake (approximately 8 miles) offering stunning views, passing through wildlife habitats from ancient hedgerows, species-rich wildflower meadows and native woodlands, to ponds and scrapes, reed beds and carefully managed islands, where rare and visiting birds can often be seen.
This traffic-free route round the lake is open for both walkers and cyclists.
On The Water
Sailing takes place on the 741 acres (that’s approximately 700 football pitches) of Carsington Water, the ninth largest reservoir in England, with a purpose built beach for easy launching and recovery.
We have a large fleet of boats, with various configurations to suit the wind conditions and your ability.
Many students go on to join Carsington Sailing Club and enjoy sailing the year round.
However, this is not essential as there is a good choice of sailing clubs in the area, each with a different feel.
There is bound to be one to suit you once you can sail.
