Sailability

Carsington Sailability

For many years Carsington Sailing Club has included a Sailability section, the operational part of which is fully integrated as part of the Sailing Club, leaving the charitable element managed as a separate entity.

The group has both disabled and able bodied members whose main objective is to bring the sport of sailing to others.

We are always looking for volunteers to help during our sailing activities. Please take a few moments to read the Volunteer leaflet or join us on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays throughout the sailing season (May to Oct) when the group meet.

Sailability Members can come to the Club to sail or socialise at any time when the Club is open. If assistance is needed it is advisable to contact the Club before attending.

Sailability has excellent facilities and equipment and has a well maintained fleet of sailing boats, specifically designed for those with limited mobility. The RS Venture Keel, our latest acquisition brings another dimension to the level of exciting sailing that the group can offer.

Each year Sailability runs a variety of events, including Fun Days, Dinghy Racing, and Training Sessions. 2016 will be no exception. See our Event Calendar for details. On September 9, 10 & 11 Carsington Sailability will host the prestigious Hansa Class National Racing Event . This will be the first time this event has been run at Carsington Water. This is exciting news and we look forward to taking part in this prestigious event.

During 2014 Carsington Sailability was successful in obtaining grant aid to help launch a new initiative called “No Boundaries”.  This project is ongoing and is enabling the group to run sail training sessions for people who have an impairment but wish to get involved. A number of new members have joined the group through this activity. We look forward to continuing with this.

Our vision for the future is to become a “Sailability Centre” for the region and we are developing a five year program to improve our facilities at Carsington to this end. Fund raising will play a big part in this project. Help from anyone who has experience in this field would be very welcome.

As part of our training program Carsington Sailing Club will again be running a series of RYA Disability Awareness Training Days these are a good learning, social and fun experience. A number of our members and volunteers are following the “Team Sailability” scheme. This scheme promoted by the RYA is aimed at providing volunteers with a focus to improve knowledge, gain formal qualifications and increase active involvement in supporting disabled sailing. Details can be obtained from the club office.

The group is looking forward to a busy 2016 and is always happy to meet people who are interested in getting involved in sailing or who are willing to help.

The club has a special membership category for people wishing to join as Sailability Members, or volunteers. Please enquire at the office for details.
