RYA Advanced Modules


RYA Advanced Modules

We offer four of the advanced module courses, covering a wide range of skills and techniques, providing something for everyone. You do not need any qualifications for these courses however it is assumed that every student starting this course has already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for Level 2/3. Please contact the office if you are interested in the Advanced Modules.

Seamanship Skills

The natural progression from Level 3 or Stage 4, providing lots of opportunity to practice technical boat handling skills and manoeuvres. During the course you will develop your ability with: Launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, Stopping the boat, reducing sail while afloat, recovering a man overboard, picking up a mooring, anchoring and sailing without a rudder.

Sailing with Spinnakers

This course will introduce you to the thrill and challenge of spinnaker sailing which is second to none. Through practical on the water experience, this course takes the sailor through the theory and rigging of spinnakers, when they can be deployed and recovering from problems when they occur. The course also covers some racing techniques, course setting and the concepts of apparent wind.

Sailing with Spinnakers is generally run using asymmetric spinnakers. If you have a interest in learning about symmetric/conventional spinnakers let us know, as we can also include this!

Start Racing


This course designed to give the confidence, skills and knowledge to take part in club racing in good conditions. Confidence is essential if the sailor is to enjoy racing.
The course involves the sailor in a range of enjoyable exercises designed to build confidence and to improve skills through practice. Techniques for starting, mark rounding and boat on boat tactics will be discussed and implemented practically.

Performance Sailing

The most advanced of the modules. The course begins exploring the most exciting elements of dinghy sailing. Involving coaching to improve your sailing and confidence on all points of sail, primarily in two person boats. Learn how to hike effectively, use a trapeze and enhance your spinnaker work to get the most out of every boat.
